SELF-MANAGED SUPER FUNDS (SMSF)
Self-Managed Superannuation Funds; what are they? Should you have one? How can you start?
If you already have an SMSF and need advice, administration or an auditor use the quick anchors on the side.
What is an SMSF?
In the form of a trust, controlled by either an individual corporate trustee or two to four
individuals, SMSF's are a way of taking control of your super.
They give you the ability to invest your superannuation in a variety of assets, from shares, term deposits and managed funds to property, art and other assets. Rules do apply, so make sure to ask us if you plan on starting an SMSF or making unusual investments.
Is an SMSF right for you?
While SMSFs have many positive things going for them such as control, variety of investments, transparency and consolidation of finances, there are also several aspects to consider before jumping in head first. SMSF's become more effective the larger they are, so if you aren't able to maintain it with either a sizeable rollover / contribution or make regular contributions they can be less effective than industry funds. SMSFs are also subject to specific compliance rules which can land you with big penalties or fines if not followed.
The good news is that we are SMSF specialists and can help you decide if you are in the position to start a self-managed super fund.
Getting started
Starting an SMSF involves having a discussion with you and working out if an SMSF is right for you, then there are a number of basic steps if you decide to start one.
The process involves choosing your trustee structure (corporate or individual), picking a name, determining an investment policy and signing the relevant paperwork. From there you open an SMSF bank account and roll over your existing super funds into the new account. You are now ready to invest. Come in, we can take you through the process today.
